Re:

Yes afraid so Taps, perhaps we shall get a mention in the Doomsday book. I try not to repeat poems under 3 years, but sometimes as you know, it is the blood-flow.

Definitely an illusion.  The Bible tells us there is "nothing new under the sun."
I love your "used" poems.  Well used makes them so much more comfortable.

Re: Kabu

It is surprising what hunger or rationing did to folk, we in the country could get the odd pheasant or orchard fruits, mushrooms/blackerries etc. Not so good in the cities though.

Re: RPresta

I suppose many things seem just natural at the time and then one looks back and thinks Oh! dear. And thank you.

Re: shamasehar

Yes I suppose a lot of single women could have been married, but for an ingrained modesty. Men are easily flattered.

Re: Pat

Well Uncle Albert tells a few long stories Pat. It is surprising though how many couples met through the fairs.

Re: Adnohr

No they were pretty tough for some Adnohr, these days the pension funds are in a shambles , goodness knows how todays youngsters will be able to retire .Yes the old girl was out to get him.

Hmm yes - the good old days were not always good. I think we are the generation who had the best of both worlds. Mom was quite determined, wasn't she?

The old poem is new to me - either I missed it earlier

or I've shaken my head and the memory escaped. Very evocative.

It is interesting to read about the past...Always enjoy hearing from Uncle Albert, who ought to be everyone's favorite uncle.

Loved the poem. People find ways to survive in situations beyond their control.

Poems and stories like you have told leave a mark on our collective consciousness in remembrance of a time not so long ago. Beautifully told. Thank you.

I do remember this wonderful poem...and as for Times past, I am hungry always for stories from back when. Sometimes who cares about the big actions it is the way small people survived and managed even to thrive in such hard times. Those plump birds fed the people who were probably having a last fling before they went off to maybe die or become wounded. Every one does their bit in their own way. Without the black market in tough times people would not survive.
