At least you had a good living and were fairly free from stress. The good folk who looked after you were probably dreading the day you all would leave. I think they may have enjoyed your company in many different ways. Of course the black day would come when you changed your mind drastically.

Children should always be best off with their Mother. I am not real sure in your case, except that you hinted at a problem that you needed to get away from in an earlier post.
