I read this yesterday, and just as I was about to comment I was interrupted by a phone call - and that was that. Reading it again this morning simply confirms what I had decided yesterday - this is gripping and superbly well written!

fancy having to drive away and leave your children behind. For you children thinking of missing Mother was probably worse than the adventure that you were about to start. I believe all children should have a chance to be on a farm for awhile.

That must have been the worst moment for your mom--driving away from you and going to face her own life or death.
