"Schlep" (unsure of the spelling)

First heard this during a stint as a baby-sitter for a Seattle family - they'd escape Germany by the skin of their teeth just before the Nazi's raided their apartment building. Mrs. E. used the word schlep to mean carry something - like a cheescake or some hot dish you'd made for a potluck - from home to the friend's house.
