Re: Taps

Actually I have got a tape it was produced for one of the factories. One day I must try to play it and relate some of the history it revealed.

Great poem.  I read a book once about Medieval times that I just loved.  I wish I could remember the name of it, or the author, so that I could read it again.  I know it was more than twenty years ago.

Re:Kabu

No only now we have to pay to have our teeth capped with gold or ceramic  both cost the same. Reminds me I have to go to the dentist soon. Do you know a hygienist session at out dentist costs, goodness i can't remember, but to cap a tooth is  £650.

Re: Ciel

Well Ciel it was true young women would sell their teeth for what seemed a fortune, but of course it led to ruination.  Yes it feels miserable.

Re: I believe the coffee-drinking custom began in Brazil or Colombia

Perhaps it was a kind of symbolism at first Pat. I know we started drinking tea amidst

not very healthy conditions and the boiling of the water was a great start to eliminate disease.

Re: RPresta

Well I am not contaminated much by passing traffic RP. I think the clothes smell sweeter after airing . Quite a few do still put washing out,so one must be careful of lighting fires,

I wait for a rainy day. Yes I think the reason tea is not grown here is because we can import more cheaply. I might just get three small bushes if I somehow feel the urge. Thank you for the information. Enjoy your coffee.

Clotheslines...a shame they have gone away, for most part. There are ordinances in these parts against them! Seems it is not only unfashionable to air one's dirty laundry, but also to air one's clean laundry! Your poem was one that makes a person think; very nice.

From wiki:The native (undomesticated) origin of coffee is thought to have been Ethiopia. The earliest substantiated evidence of either coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree is from the 15th century, in the Sufi monasteries of Yemen. [I thought it was Central America/Mexico.] Seems tea would highly labor intensive to grow and harvest, etc.

It has been a long while since I have seen a clothesline in use...Your poem is rich with symbolism.

I believe the coffee-drinking custom began in Brazil or Colombia

but it emigrated to America just in time for the Boston Tea Party - when a riotous group decided to dump the tea shipment into the harbor and refuse to honor the king's tax stamps... Or maybe it began in Morocco or Nepal after someone's goats ate the coffee beans and suddenly got frisky...

Your poem reminds me of Fantine in LES MISERABLES, in the recent movie/musical version.
