Re: kasperhoe.
Thank you for that! Glad you like it. And, as I had said, my dad was an unsung hero, not even telling his own children for many, many years...

Wonderful.
I can't find better word for it. I really like this one.
And I guess I can only agree with Wiley.

Re: Re: Re: Kabu
Yes, I can understand your poor dad feeling like that. I saw the same with mine occasionally. Sad that no one understood.

Re: Lanetay
I knew one person whose chopper was shot down; he was killed. I have a cousin who made it back fine. War is ugly.

Re: Re: Kabu
yes much safer but in Australia we have ANZAC day as our memorial day on April 25. Well Dad once told me that he hated that day for he felt totally left out. The guys had shared something he could never understand and it left him feeling kinda wierd and lonely.

This is altogether beautiful and very touching! What a great tribute to your Dad, a gentleman who did his duty even though he wasn't in uniform!

"unsung heroes were they all
civilian patriots
when called upon,
each an army
serving silent
all their days,
long past the end.
no soldier would he ever be
yet a hero none did see"
In the interest of full disclosure, my father did serve his country in the manner in which he was asked, and he really was a hero.

Re: WilleyJohn
What a kind thing to say, Wiley! Thank you, and love the diamond! You know, Daddy always gifted us with jewelry. My mother got to the point where she didn't want any more jewelry, and he'd continue to buy it. Kinda funny.

Re: TAPS
What a great commentary! He just wasn't meant for war, it appears. His daughter seems to take after him in personality traits...

Re: Kabu
Thank you. I'm sure it was more important to feed the troops! Safer, too!

This is very special to me. My dad left home at 15 to join the Army for WWI. He was too young. They wouldn't take him. Years later, he went to the recruiting place to fight in WWII. They wouldn't take him because he was 37 and had five children. So, he did what he had always done, "live beside the road and be a friend to man." I never knew anyone who was more loving, and giving, and helpful to others than was my Dad.

There are different types of bravery RP. I feel he was a brave and lovely father and would have defended you all no matter what the consequence. Little things hurt when one is a child, one just wants to be the same as others. You have made this into a tribute that would have made anyone proud to receive.

S. Sister I do love it. My father never went to war either. He was a farmer and feeding the troops was his destiny.
