Well, just look at that, Naut. All you had to do was read about it and

you're smarter already. Maybe too smart to buy one of the contraptions.

I read this yesterday (after the Royals lost their game) and Son #1 and I got to talking about those Smart Watches and other thing mentioned here, and I got sidetracked and never did get back.  Son claimed that the Smart Watches make it even easier for hackers to scam people.

Obviously a marketing gimmick I suppose folk are so use to swapping and changing the current play things. I must admit I never wear a watch unless an appointment is due. I have one with a lifetime battery, I think, perhaps it means the lifetime of the watch . However at less than $20 who cares. Just remembered I have an old silver watch but that should be worn in with a waist coat and I have not got one.

I agree with you, Naut. A watch should not die so quickly. What really strikes me is that an industry which has affected watch sales greatly (Smartphones) is also causing a type of watch to go out of date quickly.

Great post! I wear a watch only because I have no sense of time and even then, I need to remind myself to actually look at the thing! But, several family members just happen to love watches in general, and are collectors. No Apple watch here for me. They are a nice idea, but... I learned about 'planned obsolescene' as a child when my dad insisted they made light bulbs that would burn out so one would have to buy new ones, and that they could just as easily have made them to last quite a long time! He was a scientist. Yeah! LOL!

Nautikos

I only have two watches. One tells the day/date/time etc and the jewellry store owner who sold it to me is now dead having killed himself on his Harley. Now it is a good watch and when Kabu came into my life, she brought me a present of a most beautiful watch, Roman Numerals, very costly and very automatic, I keep it only for special wear because it is priceless to me.

I wore the older one on all my mechanical jobs so it was roughly used and abused but I am very attached to it because of the man who sold it to me and then died so tragically.

I would like to feel shocked but No I am not at all. We have, or younger people have been taught very carefully to live in a throw away society and for everything to become obsolete just before Christmas. Good post and watches, real watches are a great item to maker a collection of.
