Re:WileyJohn bit on celiac disease

The thing is, it could be part of my situation - but I've never had tests run - it's all been a trial & error process of elimination (no pun intended) of the symptoms. What I know for sure is that I feel younger, less joint aches, more clear-headed, and no need to camp out in the bathroom - if I don't eat anything with wheat in it. But I'd been dealing with it for ten years - before my last colonoscopy - and nobody ever gave me an actual diagnosis.  Medicare & my supplemental insurance don't cover "by guess and by golly" diagnoses.

Is this part of your situation love?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that can occur in genetically predisposed people where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine.  It is estimated to affect 1 in 100 people worldwide.  Two and one-half million Americans are undiagnosed and are at risk for long-term health complications.

healthy and damaged villi

When people with celiac disease eat gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye and barley), their body mounts an immune response that attacks the small intestine. These attacks lead to damage on the villi, small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine, that promote nutrient absorption. When the villi get damaged, nutrients cannot be absorbed properly into the body.

Interesting.  My DIL has been on total gluten-free diet for over a year and has lost a lot of weight.  I'm wondering if all that is really good for her.

Pat

I don't have any gluten issues, or any others I'm aware of, I'm happy to say, so my opinion may not be worth much, LOL. But it has been my impression for a while now that this whole gluten thing is a 'fad issue', like so many others. Of course I'm not suggesting it's never a problem ...

This reads like a very interesting book and I would enjoy reading more of what you discover. I have gone off expensive health pills. They are so expensive and sometimes they aren't compatible with our prescription meds.

Yes sometimes I think we tend to blame certain foods for tummy upsets. I thought I could not eat white bread but if I have a loaf crispy and warm it seems Oh. I always have gluten free milk or goats ,one gets in the habit of just picking it off the shelves I suppose.
