Well, I have known some pretty clueless folk, and some knew, and thus felt threatened, thereby becoming a bit dangerous; and some (pardon the pun) had no clue of how clueless they were, plodding along in blissful ignorance and confidence, and indeed, ended up winnnnninng!

A clueless man might or might not know he is clueless - it's an empirical question that would require further study. But if enough clueless people tell him he can win, he might feel both competent and confident he can, and he might in fact win...
