You made me feel like "Now where did I park my camel?"  I felt "there".

Nautikos

Good information; most of us, I think, learned some basic history way back when.....but never really gave all this much thought past test questions......and understanding as much as we can is very important.  I think Pat is right on the veils, besides modesty, they are great shade and air/odor protection that I would take advantage of if I lived in certain conditions...or around certains behaviors in the male population in public.  I've found that most items that have been around since dirt have, or had at one time, a practical origin.  Like kohl was originally used to give protection from the glare of the sun off the sand to the eyes....since they were wearing it anyway, the Egyptians started wearing it in designs and colors and turning it into makeup for decorative, as well as protective, purposes.  We wear it for fun!

Re: C_C_T

I smile at your comment about veils! And so true about conformity.

Well Naut when one looks at the fashions depicted daily in the newspaper and the sad look of the models I think a veil would make them look more attractive. It is being forced to conform that hurts.

A good explanation about her dress...I am looking forward to the next installment. Important it is to realize those areas were not completely isolated.

Perhaps, given their climate and terrain, wearing a covering

to shelter from the sun and blowing dust had its basis in practicality. I just have to question the common sense of a culture that totally disregards the minds and potential of half its population.  Oh, wait... let him who is without offense cast the first shoe....

Thank you, Naut, for addressing my question. Yes, I did know that the Koran allows for a vast interpretation of what a woman should or should not wear, and that modesty appears to be the goal. I am not familiar with the Hadith, but better understand now that it seems to require no restriction upon dress of a woman. It seems then that the woman in the video was making a double statement in this case; one with her narrative, and one stating that a lady can be a Muslim woman and dress as she considers appropriate. Just an observation. What country was she in when the video was made? I do hope she fares well.

And speaking of veils, all should see photos of one of my Italian great-grandmothers, in Southern Italy, wearing all black, and a veil, though not covering her face!
