Re: TAPS

First, I want to say how much I admire those like you, Kabu, my sister, who entered nursing or medical professions, including caregivers. What a beautiful story you have told here! And I agree, loved ones should be there if they can.

No matter who is with us physically, we die alone.  But, I think it does help for loved ones to be around to hold a hand, to mop a brow, to moist a tongue, to say kind words.  One such incident I will never forget.  When I was a nurse, a son was with his dying old mother.  He had a Hymn Book with him and he sat on the side of her bed turning the pages, and singing her the old hymns in a soft voice.  Everytime I had to go in the room, tears would come to my eyes.

Powerful poem! I used to have a deep dread of death until I almost died

rwo years ago.  Totally took it away and now I have a peace about the subject I never thought possible. I also hated the thought of growing old and/or disabled but a new appreciation for life in this realm at this point in time makes me grateful for whatever the future holds - sounds pollyannish I guess, but it's my experience so I'll end this with a smile...

Re: FSI

It's rarely that I go there in writing.

Re: Nautikos

Me, too, I prefer pleasant dreams. My dad taught me how to do that as a child!

RP

I'm glad I didn't read your powerfully evocative poem last night - I prefer happy dreams...

You capture the isolation of death so well in your poem.

Sadly RP it was the fate of older folk even a few score years ago. We all have sad memories I guess. Perhaps we try to lift ourselves to a reason to exist when we can come to terms with the past.
