interesting quotes....I understood gossip is nothing more than the maligning of another person or their character to enhance or prove you are a better person.

Oh my goodness with all these political debats going around I think we could call those people not politicians but gosspoticians. Sounds like you had fun anyway. You are like me when I say something I wish I had not then I feel guilty. Have a blessed day. Send up a prayer for George's recovery please.

OMG! You got me with another memory with this one....First Watch! Hadn't thought about brunch there in a long time!  Anyway, each time I read one of those ridiculous little homilies about gossip, I wonder if the author also walked on water.  I mean, how ridiculous!  Gossip, as defined in your post, is as natural as breathing to any reasonably well-adjusted and functioning member of the human race, IMHO. As others have said, intent is the key.  Glad you enjoyed your visit!

Re: CCT

You would probably be appalled at the juicy bits.

Yes you must do it more often and then tell us the juicy bits.

Gossip truly is fascinating...Jonathan Haidt of The Happiness Hypothesis believe it is essential towards making a person happy.

To me, the difference between "catching up" and gossiping is defined partly by a lack of malicious intent or deliberate false info exchanged between (or among) the persons who are "catching up," even if it is juicy stuff! I love to catch up once in a while! LOL!

The worth of gossip

depends on the motivation behind indulging. Is it to keep a finger on the pulse of the community, or is it to feel better than someone else, or to justify judgement? I think often it is both that makes it so easy to fall into the indulgence. Helps to remember in the midst of it, we never really know the what and why or really consider the depths and layers of the person under gossip.

In some anthropology class a long time ago I was taught that

gossip is a means of reinforcing a society's values, and that some people mind their P's and Q's  to avoid critical gossip. I remember girls in the 7th Grade were extremely prolific gossips with strong opinions on all kinds of things they know nothing about.

People can gossip about me all they want to if it gives them pleasure.  LOL.  It doesn't bother me in the least, even if what they say is just a half truth.  If the gossip about me, it must be because I spark an interest in some way.  LOL

I don't think there is anything wrong about catching up on mutual acquaintances...It is only not a good idea if it is untrue and or vicious.

I'm glad you had fun! And we mustn't forget the positive aspect of gossiping: like any chatting, it always affirms or re-affirms the bond between the gossipers - it's a bonding activity! And since we can't always talk about politics or the state of the world (partly since most of us understand very little about those things in the first place, LOL), we talk about what we understand or think we understand - the people we know...
