Great tale-spinning, Nautikos
I am also well-acquainted with some foreign customs. At this moment, I am sitting in my house (I should say our house, along with my Thai wife) in Thailand, with a row of our shoes sitting outside the door. In Thailand, we westerners are called falang, instead of gaigin. I wonder if the meaning is about the same.
I am enjoying both your tale and your method of writing. This might inspire me to spin a tale or two about my adventures in Thailand. We had an interesting encounter just 3 days ago, when we crossed the Thai-Cambodian border in a golf cart, driven by a Thai police sergeant and accompanied by 2 Thai police Majors in civilian clothes. The Thai border guards were quite unhappy with us when we drove back to the checkpoint, but in spite of them, our mission was accomplished. I am lucky not to be writing this comment from Thai jail, LOL

Nautikos
This is such an exciting adventure....and I can't help but wonder, is this where you developed this knack for "hooking" your readers by dangling bait for the next installment?! Just curious...... I would have been pushed off, too, since I wouldn't have known the rules for where one can walk around ships and such. Now, please don't leave some of us here treading water too long before you continue.

For me, the wait to have gotten on the ship would have felt like forever, especially with bags in tow.

That is the way to do it merge. You did just that. I would have probably staggered up the gang plank and would have been pushed off.

Son #1 was a gaijin for three years in and out of Yukosuka on the U.S.S. Blue Ridge. I love hearing his stories.

Naut
Wow, this took courage. How old were you? Were you married? Did you have children? It just all seems like such a delightful but frightening journey into the unknown. Looking forward to the rest.
