I remember receiving a little box of toy soldiers. I was so pleased I ran and thanked my parents profusely , I asked a friend what he received. Sadly he replied, 'a toilet roll.'

Unfortunately today's Christmas for most people is commercial, like nearly everything else... personal values included. Or did our grandparents say the same thing as they watched their youngsters go? I am fortunate in that my family celebrates the being together again, around traditional foods and giggling little ones. There were gifts, but no-one broke the bank - it was little things, many recycled things too.

It is so special to have many Christmas memories, even those that were problematic, like the Christmas Eve Son #1 had to be take to the ER to have a very badly split lip sewed up and it was days before he could enjoy the special sweet treats in his filled sock.

I almost missed this lovely post.
Our dr. the other day when Wiley was seeing him about his deepening depression, wisely placed some of it at the feet of society that builds up such expectations. When you know most of your children will make a loud noise with their silence...not even a card let alone a phone call; in a society where presents have become bigger and more to the point of crazy, it can be hard when you know that you won't be able to live up to the expectations of joy joy and more joy.
