I watched an Austin butcher demonstrating the preparation of a Turduckin and he said just their location will sell over 1000 for Christmas, and that blew my mind!  I live in the "Deer Hunting Capital of Texas" and just down the road from a large 'exotic' hunting ranch (gag!); I am not a big meat eater so I don't buy a lot but this time of year is hunting season for multiple birds an deer so the local smokehouses are full of quail, duck, turkeys and venison supplied by hunters.  Now is the time I am sure a lotof locals are stocking their freezers.  These are all animals who have been grazing in the hills we look at daily, and many had been starving in the draughts that have hopefully been broken by the recent rains .....Nature's cycles.  I hear these arguments regularly around here, of course.  When it comes to hunting, as long as the food is eaten, and the animals are hunted in their natural environments, eating their natural foods, I don't have an argument with it.  Merry Christmas and I hope your quail is delicious!

Re: WeatheredLight,

Even we who hunt down the aisles of grocery stores can, if we remember, say 'thank you' to the animals who give us their lives to maintain ours.

I'll let you know how the pheasant turns out.

I watch a particular show about Alaska where they do raise their own animals and hunt for food or for the use of the animals fur. There appears to be a true respect for the animals and a kindness towards them. I dont see that living in the city limits. My options for meet aren't nearly as kind, but one must eat. The description of your pheasant made my mouth water...truly! Nice food for thought in your post.
