Let x5 name the amount he has when he enters the fifth store.
He spent half of x5 plus $1, and then had none left.
x5 - x5/2 - 1 = 0
x5/2 - 1 = 0
x5/2 = 1
x5 = 2
Then make equation
x4 - x4 / 2 - 1 = 2
x4/2 = 3
x4 = 6
etc
x3 = (6+1)*2 = 14
x2 = (14+1)*2 = 15
x1 = (15+1)*2 = 62
