Yes, I think you're right - it would help the story if you were to develop a it of that 'What's going on?' background. It needn't even be a matter of lengthy descriptions, but could possibly be brought out in talk between the two women...

Lot of information in this post. I'll have to make note of this in case I want to write a story about any of my family who is not from Oklahoma. LOL. Now I have to go to your story before this. My computer has been down so I haven't been here since morning of the 16th.
