Yes I bet that really hurt Pat but it was the way parents treated children in those days.
I don't think we hated them for it though. It was sharp and quick and then forgotten.
Mental torture would have been far worse. I wonder why Pat. It does seem nature endows more when it is sought after.

I had a teacher who when I fell from my leg sliding out from under me while in line against the wall banged my head against the wall as she asked what I was doing? She should never have been a teacher. She also attacked my sister and she told my dad. He went up to the school and I don't know what was said...

A teacher did swat at my behind once because I argued with her. By the time I entered high school, corporal punishment was gone from the public schools - too many lawsuits. Seems the lady did invite your eyes..:) Very good, male perspective poem!

I never got spanked in school, but mother made up for it - there was
a willow tree on our property, and she never failed to make us dance and cry if we went against her rules. As for the choice of wine, the blouse buttons, etc., I'm beginning to see that little pearl buttons on a semi-sheer blouse are both invitation and enticement in the guise of fencing...

Thank you Justi . I suppose there are all sorts. I does appear that there is not a lot of discipline in schools today, but I suppose most used to leave at 14 and try to get a job.

I always felt it was a disgrace to tell my parents I had been punished,so I never did.
My Mum told me that at their school it was only in a village the headmaster would pinch the little girls arms as the sat trembling. Well I was unerved by most women, because they were more intelligent than I was.. Now I am going to whack myself on the calf of my leg as a punishment.

I was born after corporal punishment was common practice in Maryland schools. My dad certainly, though, felt the wrath of the Nuns when he was in school...I like the ways in which you convey the awkwardness that of which is felt in the poem.

I just cannot even imagine being struck by rulers or canes like that.......but, that said.....I was disciplined for whistling after the bell and had to give myself some whacks with a wooden paddle on the calf of my leg - this was the only time I was ever disciplined in school, and the worst part of it was that the 'witness' was my adored 4th Grade teacher. She later called my folks to tell them she could tell I was humiliated and assured my parents I had been punished enough - she knew of the rule that any punishment at school would be repeated at home. Thankfully, they agreed to her judgement! Now....why were you so unnerved by this woman? Don't you know she was as unsure as you? That she saw your eyes drop to the buttons of her blouse and it made her heart jump a beat?

Oh I never thought of men be at a loss for words even if they spoke fewer than women. I only thought they were more careful to choose carefully. I hate you got whacked with a ruler. yes it was good you kept it from your parents, that teacher might have been caned. I love your work.

We weren't caned, and I was never hit with a ruler either, although at boarding school a teacher slapped me once for 'outrageous affrontery', the details of which I have forgotten, LOL..And yes, the desire to unbutton a blouse can be a distraction at dinner...
