I've had huge computer crashes because of sudden loss of electricity...
That's why now I make sure to have all of my files completely, undoubtedly backed up and nowadays I mostly use my tablet which is battery powered.
We had a situation in my neighborhood for years where the electricity would just go out for no apparent reason. We're in a semi rural area but not the boonies by any means. A small wind, moderate rains or average strength storm guaranteed the lights would go out. This affected about 5-6 streets. We all called the utility, questioned, complained to no avail. Finally somebody figured out that the company was putting "band-aids" on the transformer that served us instead of actually fixing or replacing it. A report and petition was sent to the federal regulatory commission and not long after we saw in the newspaper that the company was basically told to replace the transformer within x amount of days or face a big fine and still be obligated to address the problem to the satisfaction of their customers. The transformer was replaced fairly soon and now is no problem. So you can fight city hall and win and big government does come in handy - my neighbors and I would still be in the dark if not for regulation..

We had no windstorm - but the friend I am staying with at the moment 'lost' her modem, so I know exactly what you mean when you say you feel 'separated from the world'! I needed to coonect with it again and visit Starbucks, and as I am writing this I am on a Wi-Fi connection my computer grabbed out of the air all on its own - very mysterious and slighly scary, LOL...

They were forecasting storms for 3 days before the system got to this area, so yesterday as the wind began kicking up, and in advance of lightning, I shut 'er down - the computer that is. If the power goes out unexpectedly the computer's complete restoration is an iffy proposition.
