Love the game too - but would rather play than watch. Well - that used to be the case....

You have summed up many neat things about baseball. I like how it is a team sport, yet there is so much going on individually.

What I also lie about the game is how so little has changed. That makes the statistics more comparable. So a person can compare players. In the NFL, for instance, rules change so much it is tough to compare eras. In the NHL, the creation of an overtime period, the ending of ties and giving a team a point, even if they lose in overtime makes it difficult to compare teams across eras.

Nautikos

If you've never seen "Bull Durham", "Field of Dreams", and "For the Love of the Game"...... I want to suggest you movie binge sometime and watch Kevin Costner's love affair with baseball on film.  All three are really enjoyable films and touch on the mystique of the game in different ways.....and I believe there very definitely is a mystique to baseball that is not there in other sports.  Enjoyed the post, and will be following the game, too.  The Husband and I used to go to Royals games occasionally....and ate in a restaurant some of the players used to frequent, saw George Brett in there quite often back in the day.  Some of the Chiefs were often in there as well - now they were a different breed!!!!

George and I love baseball. I love the fact that other than the two complaints you have this is a morally decent sport. When we lived in Atlanta we went to see them a lot. The braves are our boys.

A lot of those little things they do: chewing a cud, adjusting their cup,

kicking the dirt, tapping the bat, adjusting the bill of their cap just before they throw a pitch, etc., are holy rituals which, if performed in just the same order as they were performed during a winning game, the baseball gods will reward with victory... It's not just the players who wear lucky socks, sit in a certain chair, etc. All the fans have to follow their lucky rituals, also...

Perhaps something feels too tight Naut. I suppose it would not be a good place to catch a ball.. Enjoy tonight.

I had to laugh at your "minor irritants" because they are mine as well.
Another of mine is their constant fastening and refastening of their batting gloves.

Rooting for the Royals as well...

You may get a laugh out of what Young 15 yr old Grandson Josh said to me about Cricket.

His Cousin is a really good cricketer so I asked him if he too liked to play.

"No Nan, it's pretty boring really. Unless you're batting it 's just standing around."

I said well, what about bowling, that's full on.

"But Nan" he says. " It's just throwing a ball really." He's pretty good at field Hockey though.
