Perhaps Ben thinks you are hunting when he rides beside you. He senses it is different than trotting on a lead. Interesting though as we may smell differently as we drive.

We like to think we are unique individuals, why wouldn't our dogs

also be. I think it's why we have chemistry with some, and antipathy toward others. It's why they all want to bark at "that guy."

The Scientific American once said that dog owners and dogs sharing a long mutual gaze had higher levels of oxytocin in their urine than owners of dogs giving a shorter gaze. (Oxytocin, is a humble peptide of nine amino acids that is sometimes called the “cuddle hormone.”)

Nautikos

Aren't they a hoot!LOL!  One has to wonder how they develop their preferences.....I mean, with humans these things can usually be seen in the influence of a parent or older sibling, one 'picks it up'....but, my cats were orphaned at an early age and are two pairs of sisters from different litters....and all four are as different as night and day in dietary preferences, grooming, play....and, yes, travel preferences.  I haven't noticed anything about how dark it is.......

I know of the two dogs I have had ... as separate to family farm dogs, the poodle was way smarter than the other was in every possible way.

Each an individual, even down to what they like to eat. It was never more evident than with the 5 puppies here - some things similar, but boy oh boy, they were also so different one from the other. I lift my hat to dog trainers!
