Maybe what you are referring to is self esteem vs pride. Self esteem is healthy. But it is difficult to know the difference sometimes, definantly.

Pride is a hard one to deal with. It would seem that there is good pride and bad pride--pride that builds up and pride that tears down. We are taught to have pride, and then we're told it "goes before a fall". It is a struggle to get it just right.
