yes, to send four sons off to the civil war and all come home, something to be thankful for. to know your family history is one thing, but to have been told stories makes it so much more special

It is interesting to read the impact of the Civil War on your family history...That is something how the vice president at the time's state had seceded.

Again, very interesting! That Ben recovered and was able to work the farm again speaks volumes of Ollie's skill and care...And I imagine there was probably a lot of bad blood left even after the war over the fact that Tennesseans had fought on both sides...

I was happy reading how they never sold their slaves and even more happy that they released them. I am sure that many of the slaves who had been with a family for generations did feel like family.

Oh the stories of the war make my heart hurt. My people lived in one of the two counties in Alabama who banned slavery, yet so many of my ancestors were killed in the war. They never owned a slave, never believed in slavery and lost most of what they had the confederacy was not all about slavery.

Goodness Taps they were lucky. A soldiers life was a short one in those days. At least they did their duty and I suppose they were held in esteem for doing so.
