Go to Life in the fast lane--where's the on ramp?

- Go to On Being Nine Years Old
I was born at the end of the war....how can I forget, every decade they tell me how old I am...LOL... But I can remember the Suez Canal crisis and Mother saying with a fatalistic shrug that she supposed we would be facing World War 111 now. I worried myself sick and the teacher at school finally asked what was wrong. Mother had to do some fast back tracking and Dad was angry with her. One of the few times ever.

You recall the events so clearly and I certainly remember 'The Letter Edged in Black' music that came out when my brother Michael was killed. You are such a gifted writer Sis.

Yes Pat we all probably worried as kids especially when the teacher said to us as one child went home crying. Her Daddy has been killed and I expect a good many of you
will suffer the same before this war is over. I used to worry that the tree trunk on wheels at the top of our lane would not stop a tank. I expect it would have gone straight through the house nearby. As you say it is the unexpected that clobbers one.
