It is hard to understand how people can live their whole lives in that state of mind. But they do, and to their own detriment.

I worked in the 19-90's with guys dying from AIDS. Some of them, even at the end were rejected by their families. Broke my heart. Some of them were outrageously naughty to us ...just a coping mechanism.
