Like Pat and you, from rafters into hay and from high banks (and once a not terribly high bridge) into water has been the extent of my own unassisted 'flights' - I'm not sure I'm ready for a 10,000 ft drop aided by something the size of a bedspread...

The only high places I would jump was into deep water.  The highest was nearly 30 ft.  I felt spanked for a long time.

When I was 13 we used to jump off the high rafters in Uncle Sam's

barn, a drop of ten or fifteen feet into the hay. I think that may be only a mere hint of the thrill it must be to jump out of a plane at 10,000 feet.
