We used to get dust storms in eastern Washington when I was
a little kid - we lived in rural Kennewick in the southern part of the state, and at the time they hadn't brought widespread irrigation - so there was lots of sand, sagebrush and sunshine. And dust storms.

Re: Naut
Have you ever seen picture of the Oklahoma Dust Bowl days?
Also years ago I was in a really bad dust storm west of El Paso, TX in which it was so dark and blowing so hard we couldn't drive. As we sat on the road being buffeted by dust being piled agains the car, there were what looked like plate sized Texas tarantulas crawling onto the road out of piles of dust. I was scared to death they would find some way to get into the car while we had to sit there.

Looks truly ominous, and the effects must be harrowing! I remember pictures of similar dust clouds coming out of the Gobi Desert, but didn't realize we could get them even here in North America...

It looks horrific...makes me want to hide somewhere just looking at it .It also reminds me of the Summer dust storms the North wind would bring down from the red Center of australia when I was a kid on the farm A hot North wind was the same as your Richards. The red dust would seep in everywhere and Mother would be distraught.
