Go to Life in the fast lane--where's the on ramp?

I really think this is some of your very best writing...well, that I've ever read. And, contrary to most, I read this as doing a great job showing the govt lady as just doing her job and sounding pretty human and sympathetic in doing so......and in showing the anger focused on the right person - the dad - and toothless or lacking laws to protect the children's welfare. I really like the revision; however, I would suggest an 'introduction' of some sort to the change to Stell from Stella....by the neighbor, perhaps, just so it doesn't suddenly seem to appear - unless I missed something (entirely possible!).

No - nobody deserves to have to feel that way. The worst thing is that we, as taxpayers, are, and have always, paid the salaries for those people who make us feel less than nothing! You see? This story is getting me all riled up! Great writing, Pat-B.

I just don't understand why the government has to make people feel like less than human in order to receive help so desperately needed

Poor woman and poor little girls. Life was different. Welfare was the last straw and to be treated like a criminal by someone from the department. Just so humiliating and just so unfair.

I guess it was humiliating to receive money from the state in those days, Not so today some make a living out of working the system.
