I had just arrived home when I found him/her there. I went inside to get my camera so that I could take a picture. When I got back out there, he was gone. I couldn't find him anywhere. He was the movingest turtle I've ever seen. Nothing slow about him.

Amazing stair-climbing turtle, fascinating scuta or no...
I do love turtles, despite the fact they're always home, they travel a lot, and are at risk from so many mindlessly speedy things.

Each little section is a scute or a scutum. The shell in total is a shield or Scuta. Son #1 was teaching me this and I thought it was very interesting.

Neat poem! Scuta is the plural of scutum, the shield a Roman soldier carried into battle! I didn't realize it was also the term for tortoise 'shields'...
