There is another one I was reminded of on this perennially interesting topic, one that involves personal experience...When lecturing on certain issues it is sometimes necessary to refer to the famous German philosopher Immanuel Kant. When doing so, one must never use the proper German pronunciation of this gentleman's name, but take great care that it comes out as in can't...

Re:

Years ago I knew a girl in high school whose parents named her Ivah.  That was old fashioned but it wasn't too bad until she married a fellow with the last name of Odor.  In those days a girl always took the name of her husband.  Now days you have the option of keeping the one you always had.

I went to school with someone and her parents for some idiotic reason named her Constance.  That doesn't seem too bad until you add the last name of Lay.

There is a German author who writes interesting books on beauty and antiquity - his name is Dr. Franz Ficker. His last name means in German what it would in English if you substitute a 'u' for the 'i'...

I've always found family names fascinating, perhaps because mine

was so unusual. "Hupy." I never met anyone with that name who wasn't a fairly near relative. Mama's birthname was Savage. Rode the schoolbus with three kids from the Legg family: Robert, Lola and Harry.

I had a wonderful list at work of names I had collected from files....still have a paper one in my basement in KC....this one was saved on my computer in the Cat office in Irving and was lost when they changed out my hard drive and I wasn't there to save it!  We see names from all over the country and co-workers would send me specimens for my collection.  I called the list "Characters for My Novel".   I remember fondly calling Mrs. Enema from Gardner....and Rev. Rock Backwards in Oklahoma.  It's always fun steeling yourself to call these folks....thinking about how you'll pronounce their name, addressing them when they pick up the phone......     I've started a new one.....last week's entry was a man named Biggerstaff.  It does hone one's confidence - I'll say that!
