Very interesting post and I'm sorry I'm so late to class! I can't wait to read the f/u as this has all sorts of thoughts going in my head. The biggest saving grace for human beings, I think, will be GIGO....so full AI is probably a pipe dream as we seem incapable of producing anything w/o error--even if the error is in not seeing the big picture and adjusting accordingly. That said, I am a stickler for wording and are they saying control humans or supersede humans? By sheer number - because of what almost looks like planned obsolescence with the burgeoning LGBT swing.....and by our rampant dependence on technology, I can see Hawkings' argument that AI "could" supersede humans - a different thing, even if leading to same result, than controlling humans.🌷🎉💋👌

Even I know Stephen Hawkins he is awesome... But we will not be taken over by technology. It has a lot to do with there being fewer jobs for laborers, fewer manufacturing jobs available etc, but it will never happen. God is still in charge.

Looking forward to your next post on this. I feel pretty optimistic about saying we
don't have to worry about much of Hawking's predictions. Pretty interesting though.

oops! in that last sentence I said it may not be IT, but I meant AI... I think perhaps Mr. Hawking is not only right, he's being generous.

Hawking, IMHO has a point. Already technology, AI if you will, has
enable humanity to dumb itself down to the point that millions of us in North America and probably much of the "civilized" world would be hard put to survive a year if the grid went down. Most have no knowledge of animal husbandry, butchering, preserving. No experience with planting and cultivating, no knowledge of canning, salting, drying fruit or maintaining a subsistence lifestyle. Nor do most know how to build anything that doesn't come with instructions from a place like Ikea, even a cooking fire. We don't chop wood or make fire, we don't know what wild berries or fruit is safe to eat, how to catch a fish or clean and skin a small animal for cooking - how to patch clothes, how to tend a cut or a burn without the aid of a medic. Automatic thermostats, electric heating, refrigeration, washing machines and other kitchen appliances, automobiles, grocery stores...
These may not be IT - but could 90% of us survive without them?

Emotion I expect, I cannot see robots desiring anything to a great extent. Whilst man always wants the unachievable.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect a Post about Science to leave me hanging on a Cliff edge with my finger nails. LOL...
Prof Hawkins is indeed a man to inspire, to be admired, but like all of us he can't get everything right.
