Pat i saw a piece about how one could grow straight into straw or hay bales, but I would not fancy that. We have built several raised beds out of
odd frames etc and fill them up with soil and home made compost with a layer of bought in compost on top I am trialling them with flowers this year one bed with anemone as they like a well drained soil.

Some people are just clever at some things while others are clever at something else. I think your brothers concept could be adapted very nicely and not cost too much at all. Just some more earth every couple of years.

Clearly Brother John knows what he's doing! Hay bales? Wouldn't have occurred to me in a million years...

Great ideas for raised beds!
I didn't think of using bales to support them, which means hauling a very different quantity of top soil.
