Reading this reminds me about an uncle of mine on the paternal side who was an alcoholic. Outside of he, Grandma, Grandpa, his wife and my father, no one else knew that he was. It was kept very hidden.
As for what became of him, he did stop drinking in the 1980s. He ended up passing away from Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1993.

There was a time when I believed that I had a normal Childhood ....as i got older and people began to talk ...I realized that it was a priveleged Childhood and that is so sad. So many families hide dark horrible things. Nice post and it will be fun catching up with really old friends as in going back to when you were kids.

I like your concept of 'touchstone people' - when we really reflect, I think most of us have those...And that couple most have masters at camouflage to be able to hide their troubles from a child as perceptive as you...
