Gravel might be more practical and require less maintenance, but wiggling your toes in grass is WAY more fun!

The fresh air and sunshine is a wonderful tonic Justi. I hope we never lose that joy.

Yes it is amazing how a bit of shelter helps crops to grow even a cold frame I grow loads of carrots in the plastic tubs that are used by bakers etc. I like the food safe ones, I expect the supermarkets throw them out. It is hard work at times, but I guess one gets aches sitting in a chair all day. I still get the cramp most mornings,a good job I am not swimming the channel.

Those lovely days so long ago but fresh often in memory as good and innocent. I worked in my garden yesterday and I enjoyed it so much. I do so appreciate how you keep working so well. Be blessed in this beautiful day.

Re: Re:Ciel
I don't have your energy for so much gardening, but a nice rock garden would suit me, with cactus and rock roses and hens-and-chicks and the like.
I do think about putting up a simple green house sorta thing in the back. I think it would be wise to grow food where one can, as things may get dicey for agriculture and food prices in the next few years.

I guess there is only so much one can do in such adverse circumstances. Perhaps you could grow flowers in a container and keep it moist.

Re: Kabu
I guess there are not enough hours in the day if one wants to spend half one's life watching tele. My daffs are going over and that silly Archie has cut the ones on the grass with the mower. I tell him each year to leave them to die down, but like the idle wind he heedeth not.

Re: I've thought of replacing parts of my lawn with gravel, because
I think if you wanted to use the shady parts you would be better to just raise the garden
in that area. I would use some kind of edging about four inches high and cover the old grass with more soil, it would be nice to turn the old turf over first. you could then choose shade loving plants. Or I expect some annuals would do OK in summer, if you watered them. One chap who used to blog on here said his garden was crammed full of hosta plants.

I am pleased adnohr, perhaps those things that truly happen remain amongst our memories more vividly when we step back and remember.

Re:
I know it absolutely made me feel ill if someone gave me that wretched cake . Years ago my youngest brother bought a pint bottle of liquor, I said to him this will make us ill it was made from caraway . He grumbled and put it in the cupboard, very slowly I drank just a drop of it over a year or so when he was in college. I never heard the last of it when he came home and found the bottle half empty.

Re:Ciel
Yes water is becoming more expensive and I suppose as folk become older they do not want maintenance fees to service the lawn. Most of my lawn is garden now ,it is swings and roundabouts.

A lot of lawns have been replaced with rocks, gravel, concrete...
I think a nice rock garden would be a great water- and work-saver, and look a lot nicer than a slab of concrete. Those are the big issues, especially water. In this desert environment, lush green lawns are a luxury that is getting harder and harder to justify as water becomes more and more of an issue.

I loved fishing as a child....and this made me remember, always telling people to spell my name with one "r" like the seed, not having any idea what the seed tasted like or anything.....and the first time I had one I spat it out of my mouth, so disappointed!

I've thought of replacing parts of my lawn with gravel, because
in certain shady areas, grass just doesn't grow. I could plant hostas - they love shade -
but that would complicate the mowing for the boys..

This is one of the best poems I have ever read, CCT. I've copied it without your permission, but it's only for me to read again and again. What memories of our childhood (growing up with my brother) you have invoked! So just right on. Thank you
