I'm glad you found my eyeglass prescription way of describing paradigms useful, I always did. I wanted to say that it's been building more and more in me that when I understand it in these terms, I can see some parallels in the Christian faith......there are those who will read the same Bible but who have chosen not to interpret it, have basically chosen not to even relate to half of it for all practical purposes....while there are those (get Bonnie going) who can quote word for word (from the version she swears by) every single verse in there and launch into an impassioned discourse on how this relates to that.
I can't think of the guy's name from Houston who is on every Sunday and preaches all happiness and direct your path to God - and I'm not questioning his sincerity but he is just miles from Bonnie's Cowboy Church preacher where they don't speak in tongue's but they do not candy coat for live television broadcast and ratings.
And that demonstrates the wide swing in American Christianity but leaves out the extremes at either end, of which there are plenty. Luckily, the Bible isn't a book of hate and a lot of violent retribution, with punishment and comeuppance to come in the hereafter and not here on earth, and not meted out by mere mortals...or who knows what Christians might look like today? But there have been paradigm shifts.
Again, this just means to me that, as that guy arguing that challenging the things in the Koran is the tact peace-loving Muslims need to take, shouting down the 'radicals' who insist on following those horrible and hateful parts does give a reason to hope....and I'll take anything at this point.

Reading your entry it goes back to when people say that they are insane. As you have pointed out, which I believe to be correct, they are not insane because they are following the norm.
