Sometimes it's difficult for others to remember that not everyone knows everything that everyone else knows! I knew that a 'sock hop' was a dance ( an old '50's term ), but that doesn't necessarily mean that everyone else would know that! Definitely don't lose any sleep over that one . . .

Make that bop, not bob...I guess some of us were cutting our hair in a bob, but most still wore pony tails....and either wore full skirts with petticoats or jeans rolled up and white shirts with penny loafers...the older girls wore the poodle skirts and I did eventually actually have one of those but just as they were going out of style.....I'm just setting the era of the original sock hops, trying to jog memories in case they were called something different in other areas.

Well, I'm like jeansaw....American Bandstand grew out of sock-hops...I couldn't wait until I was in junior high and was old enough to go to them; they were held in the gymnasium.....we did the bob, the stroll, all those dances the older teenaged kids did and we had been practicing in our bedrooms....of course, we'd done all our practicing with other girls!

lustor
i started going to sock hops when i was 13 and continued till i was married. i thought everyone my age did that, but then maybe is was a regional thing. growing up in a small town in kansas there was not much else to do.....something the kids today are missing out on, good clean fun. and good exercise i might add.

I did not know what a sock hop is until I went and checked out the link. And it dates back to the 1950s. At first, I figured that it must have been some sort of new term.

Yes I do! We contemplated sponsoring one by the cub scouts but for every idea I had they found 10 reasons not to do it. I think they just didn't want to make the time it took to plan anything. I would love to go to a sock hop...
