Recently NPR's ''On Point'' had a show on the future of self driven cars. I don't

  agree with it at all!

I do at least 100 miles/day, sometimes rush hour, sometimes not, and the old folks have nothing on the kids - THEY are the ones texting and not paying attention, who have not yet learned that the far left lane is for faster traffic, and who do not slow down on slippery roads because thy have never fishtailed. Lack of experience - putting all the other drivers on the road at risk. Your post is so right on!

Re: Kabu

You don't need to tiptoe out!  There are plenty of older drivers who are still fine drivers...but there should probably be testing done at set intervals for reflexes, vision, etc. and/or doctor clearance ....just as my 83 yr old helper can work circles around me, she drives just fine! Others start showing signs of distraction, losing their way and stopping to figure it out in the middle of the lane while in their late 60's.  There is no one-size-fits-all....but there are indicators....so just as there is an age minimum, there can be an age max at which certain parameters must be met.

Distracted driving has become quite the pandemic out on the road.

I know K they are trialling those cars here. I suppose if they just  jiggled along at 5mph it would not be too bad. Some of the Oldies driving invalid vehicles tank along the pavements . I expect when accidents and vehicle mount up they will have to restricted to one day a week outings. One would not get away with using a mobile here, police are keen on that usage, but folk still do it if they think they can get away with it.

I was going to write a post about this TOTALLY INSANE development, but you've said it all...

Krisles

I have a Toronto Star article on my desk that says among a lot of other things, “The competition between auto manufacturers and tech companies has been heating up in recent months, with both industries pushing to get to market with driverless-car technologies." (Dana Flavelle, Toronto Star, March 17, 2015)

Of course I have to agree with everything you've written, and it gets scarier and scarier each time I get out on the road. The average citizen today has already proven they cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Putting even more gadgets in these cars is just asking for trouble! And they've also already proven that distracted driving is just as dangerous ( if not more so ) than drunk driving. But people continue to do it anyway! Sometimes I really fear for our future . . .

Love this post.  You are soo right.  I had not been in an accident in my life, not one that I'll admit to hehe.  Until recently when I got a new vehicle for the first time in my life.  At 51 years old and in two years 30k miles later, I have been rear ended and TBoned.

The old man that TBoned me came straight at me from a parking lot.  My car is red.  How do you not see that.  He gunned his car straight into me.  I was worried about my back.  The new one.  It cost me more than the car.  I had my dog in the car with me and he was shaken and thrown.  It pushed me two lanes over.  I was only going about 5 miles an hours as the light in front of me was red.

Tell me, do cops treat woman differently or am I imagining that.  Or do they treat everyone like they are crazy?

I can't imagine letting my car drives itself. It is a crazy idea but. I am sure it is going to happen soon.
