I don't know....you know I'm very much an Obama critic but I can't say I see this as that compelling. Everyone looks at photos and sees what they see, the eye of the beholder and all that. Personally, I look at his hand, all the fingers are quite relaxed-looking in the way a person does when they raise their index finger and shake it in a nay-saying, "wagging" manner - and I interpret the faces laughing as though someone just made a wisecrack of some kind that he is jokingly responding to in what is a very common and, to me, natural manner. I'm just saying, that would be my interpretation and I have seen the assholes making the sign, too....so I get the other meaning.
I have no doubt that Obama is very much influenced by his upbringing....and probably very well has "closet" Muslim leanings. I personally never understood how he could be very Christian and listen to Rev. Wright's hate-filled rantings for all those years. That said, I fear that too many people are completely turned off and away from considering very clear and obvious arguments put forth for concern when too much "reaching" for evidence - which, I'm sorry - IMHO this photographic "interpretation" by this journalist is - draws attention and drowns out further consideration of more definite arguments. Without audio, this photo is just up to the eye of the beholder.
I think there is too much solid evidence of his neglect to focus on and you do a magnificent job of bringing the info we need to our attention - I count on you for that so I hope this comment on this one article doesn't sound unappreciative of the work you do for us. This is the first article you've shared I've had the slightest quibble with.
Finally (she says!), you may not be aware of this, but that gesture is not at all uncommon in Christian circles as well...among the young, when listening to music. It starts out with raising the arm and often changes to a finger pointing upwards to Heaven. I don't do it from church as I haven't been in years, but find I just naturally often do it just listening to good music when I get carried away and I'm really into it....my arm shoots up....and the finger is UP!!!! (of course, the hand is usually waving all over the place along with my body by that point......)

He's either very ignorant of that sign's meaning (probably not) or has the unmitigated gall to flaunt it in public with a grin on his face. I would like to believe in his innocence but that is rather difficult to do.
