For me, there a came a time
when it was no longer funny. I don't know if I aged out of it or there is just a profound lack of humor in the world any more. But to answer the question, once upon a time, it was, and probably because of many of the factors you mention -- beer, beer, beer...

I went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans back in '77. SNL was filmed there that year!

For Christmas a couple of years ago, my wife actually bought me the first two full seasons of SNL on DVD. We began watching them, in order, and never made it to Season Two. Although some great comedians came out of the SNL cast ( Belushi, Akeroyd, Chase, etc. ) we were surprised there was a second season. It really wasn't all that funny! Original, yes. Controversial, yes.Innovative, yes. But funny? Eh. And Hansen's muppets were actually quite annoying! But the third or fourth show, we were fast-forwarding through their skits. The show has had its up and downs over the years, but we've stopped watching it altogether many, many years ago . . .

The show has evolved a lot over the last forty years. I have watched bits and pieces of episodes, never a full one. Generally, what I watched were "Best Of," so I was seeing the most famous and best.

SNL has always been a hit or miss for me. Some of it hilarious, some totally stinks, most just ok.
