Naut...great observation, and a question I ask myself. Often people just think they are naturally gifted. Some do, and don't have to put in the effort, but lose their ability over time. Some, though, are delusional, and would rather maintain the delusion than really work on themselves. I've noticed over the years that these poor souls channel these behaviors across many areas in our lives. My singer, for example, doesn't accept her own faults anywhere in her life, so of course she will not recognize her own laziness in her singing.

This whole thing is extremely interesting! The last bit is a bit mystifying to me, though - I don't quite understand why a singer who can hear the pitch is a lazy singer! (I can understand the 'lazy singer' part, but I don't understand what hearing the pitch has to do with it!)
Maybe it's because I don't know the first thing about the technical side of singing - I just totally adore beautiful voices, and most of all sopranos! They can send a shiver down my spine...
