I took time to read up on this gassing process after you posted this.  They make it sound not too awful bad, but who knows.  We do have a habit of picking out the best looking and best smelling fruit and veggies at the store and leaving the ones we don't like the looks of.

Kabu:

I am sure they don't announce it. I heard it from a store that does not do it and I went in search of an answer and asked a person from that department in another place and he said yes that had been a practice for a long time. His response was your fruit and vegetables are fresher when they reach you. My thought was baloney.

Wiley

They fill the containers with some sort of gas so it stops the growth and ripening until they reach their destination. Then they degas them and we buy them no telling how old they are.

I have never heard of this... How awful. I cannot cope with the fact that Australian fruit trees have been bulldozed because farmers cannot compete with inferior imports. What a weird world we have ended up living in!!!
