Well, I suppose everybody lies at one time or another, usually to either spare someone's feelings, or to save their own necks! No, there is no 'free speech' anymore, simply because, it seems that every time someone does 'speak their mind' about something ( anything ), they end up having to apologize for it later, because one person may have been offended! "In my opinion" doesn't seem to hold any weight anymore . . .

I was told by a Persian student once that in his culture the polite lie was both expected and preferred to the direct and possibly uncomfortable truth. It seems to me if it's done out of consideration for the other's feelings, rather than to hoodwink them in some way, where's the harm?
