While I disagree with you on 'alright', I fully agree with you in this case! This is one of my pet peeves - it sets my teeth on etch when encounter these mistakes! It's good you brought it up...But this reminds me that I have another one, and I shall bring it up soon (pun intended, LOL)...

It sounds better when that is what one has heard a lot. That is exactly why such mistakes persist. People don't want to correct themselves because it doesn't sound right.  Of course, it does after you've used it correctly for a while. 

And then/than, and its/it's...

That is actually what an editor does sometimes, to make a sentence work: change the structure so it is clear what is meant.  That's the point, ultimately: to make sure that the reader gets what the writer means to say.

It can be confusing sometimes, but your explanations make sense. I think the 'average' writer will still mix up "I" and "me" at certain times, but usually ( in my opinion ) because one sounds better than the other ( not that that's a great excuse, but it's the only one I've got ). Now if people can just figure out the difference between there, their and they're . . .

I suppose if one did not know or was unsure one could say I went to the Zoo and Mary  accompanied me. Or Mary went to the Zoo and took me with her.

I once read a little book called Good English probably. In it I read always remember the nominative in writing once you remember this it is simple. Now read really should be spelled red, perhaps it will be in time.
