Here in st louis depends on the neighborhood...one block over can make a big difference in some areas...

When my Grandma still lived in Mala Dobra, in Bohemia before her Ellis Island adventure, the gypsies came to the village while everyone was in the wheat fields and stole anything they could find. One of them filled her large skirt pockets with the the contents of the sauerkraut barrel.

Well if it makes it safer or gives a protective illusion, that is a bonus. I suppose there was not much to steal in the old days A pie on the windowsill or a washtub.
