I suppose apart from using words that do not express what the writer means one must capture the readers imagination as quickly as possible. Apart from that I think one does find that many books fail halfway through if not before, because the idea that motivated the story has run its course and it begins to feel like hard work for the author and consequently the reader. Maybe the author is pressurized to complete the work if he or she has written a good book previously, or despondency and the whole thing collapses.
