WWW and beachbelle, this story shocked me too.
I can get a little self congratulatory, living in "liberal" Massachusetts. Racism runs deep, even deeper than I imagined.

Yeah, so this made me physically ill. Really.
There's a lot of this brand of "liberal" at my old alma mater actually - a "liberal arts" school with all kinds of lofty, almost socialist, goals...course all the department heads and deans are still old white men, and I would estimate that 90% of the faculty and student body is upper-middle class white folks, but hey...

Cynthia,
what a sad story, and one I can relate to as well. Maybe not many Americans realize it, but we Anglophones in Quebec were made to feel like we were not wanted in the Province, and I will never forget that, and I eventually moved. Over 200,000 people left the Province of Quebec over the years, just because they were made to feel unwelcome. It is so sad and un-democratic when folks can live with impunity as they trample on the rights of others. Ah, but I know from life experience, that the saying, "What goes around comes around", really does, come around.

Its easy to have convictions...
What really matters is living by them..

Ditto with missy and food4. How bloody pathetic and sad. I want to spew ugly words at the state of this country but I know it is people, not the country, that are so full of hate. I think, anyway.

Incredible, powerful post...
I am disgusted along with you. Saddened and heartbroken for those two wonderful women and for the children whose lives would have been enriched, but weren't.

Another example...
why the liberal and conservative labels don't mean much any more. Liberal ideas are nice. Liberal actions????
