Oh how sweet to buy kitty a hot water bottle. That wrapped in a towel will make her as cozy as if with mama.

Re:

Yes I shall experiment Jimmy. The walnuts are pickled in the green shells before the nut hardens been around a long time here. I have done them in the past but it is quite a bit of work one has to prick the shells or cut off the ends before doing anything and it makes ones hands look awful.

Re: Pat

I guess our Mum's could make a load of delicacies, the cakes one buys now all seem stodgy and the jam will not keep unless it is put in a fridge. Too much water included I expect. Fresh walnuts are a real treat the ones we get come from abroad mostly and are quite dry.

Re: Re: That's how cats fight...

That's great to hear! One of my girls had a cat with a belly-trap. She would lie there, all spread-eagled, seemingly out in cat-dreamland, inviting that belly-rubbing... and as soon as a hand touched fur, SNAP! all claws in! Cat like that, you could probably catch bears with.

Good for you in finding different ways to care for that cat. Even a large bundle of blankets would work with that hot water bottle. It's too dangerous for kitties to be outside sometimes! And pickled walnuts? What will they think of next . . .?

Oh, this visit was such a pleasure. Thank you for the reminder about

plum jam. My mom used to make it, and all kinds of other jellies and jams, and a strawberry-rhubarb pie that would melt in your mouth. Never heard of pickled walnuts, but I do like crushed walnuts in the morning porridge...

Re: That's how cats fight...

Well Ciel I thought she had a rather swollen tummy . When this was ripped it looked pretty grim, but she did not seem to take a lot of notice except for being nervous and as she could lick the wound I thought it might be wiser to leave it for a while as I knew she would have gone frantic if I touched her. I just kept an eye on her condition. Surprisingly it has healed perfectly and the swelling is no longer there. My B.I. L is the only one who can stroke her tummy and he says it looks normal now.

Re: Bel Marshall

One has to pick the walnuts before the nut sets . We have them in shops here but as I said not up to the home made ones. I think I like raspberries they seem cleaner than strawberries. Although as you know a lot of strawberries are grown at a high level for ease of picking. I grow early and late raspberries, yum, yum.

Re: Re: Kabu

We always had a jar of ginger at Christmas and some of those sticky dates . I used to make pickled walnuts but the trees are not on my property any longer Arthur lives opposite them, but to get him to pick green walnuts would be like pulling hen's teeth.

Re: Wiley

She was  fine looking woman Bro. A good decision to move and a good country to choose. I did wonder how or why you arrived in Montreal.

ChiffChiff

My mother used to put up that greengage jam, of course she was a Brit too and used to do a lot of the things you talk about. She raised 8 kids on ile d'Anticosti, and raised chickens and turkeys to feed us all. We moved to Montréal after a German destroyer showed up in 1938 with a gaggle of politicos etc. because Hitler wanted to buy Anticosti but our Premier Maurice Duplessis and Prime Minister King stopped that from happening Bro.

Pickled walnuts?

I have never heard of them.  I intended to get out to a farm to pick raspberries and strawberries for jam but the summer got away too fast.

I cannot remember the last time that I had any jam...I like the idea of the hot water bottle for the cat.

That's how cats fight...

rear claws to the tummy.  Like kangaroos but without the bounce.  They just roll around in the dirt.  I hope she will let you keep an eye on that wound, so you can see if it goes all reddish and inflamed.
