Sometimes the immediate feeling is relief for the lost love and for oneself, purely because it became so difficult to bear. Then comes the grief as one remembers the 50 beautiful years together,
My Mother died of Alzheimer and at first I was glad for her, and I was all cried out, I "lost" Mother in my 30's long before she actually died... Later the grief came, when I could remember back to who she had been before her illness.

That's very sad to hear. I'm sure she appreciates any comfort and support you can give her at this time . . .

Sadly in my experience the carer trundles on for ever. It is when the inevitable loss occurs that the real trauma begins.
