I agree with FSI. Back in William's time, there were no middle-relievers or closers. The pitcher who started the game had to endure til the end. With a minimal amount of pitches in his arsenal, the better batters could figure out his pitches fairly quickly, and go 2 for 3 or 3 for 4 each game! Today, with teams having a dozen different pitchers in their bullpens, that luxury no longer exists. You may see guys flirt with averages around .350 or .360, but .400 or better? I don't think so . . .

No, I do not feel that will happen. When Williams did it, he was facing seven teams and less pitchers. Batters need to see pitchers a lot to hit them well.
