I wonder if he put a bit of food out for them, they might ignore the tomatoes personally I would fence them off with a section of wire netting as long as they could not climb on top and mess on the plants. Make sure the fence is guaranteed for twenty years.

Let's hope the tea bags work! I'd hate to see the little critters massacred, annoying as they can be at times...But the fencing affair is getting ridiculous! If I were you, I'd get in touch with whoever is in charge there, and inform them you are going to write a story about your harrowing experience and have it published in your local Town Crier...
